Art Elements and Design Principles Vocabulary

Art Elements:
  • Line: a pattern that joins together segments of an image
  • Shape: it is a defined space inside of a picture
  • Color: a type of art that adds a layer of depth and interest to a picture
  • Value: the lightness or darkness of a photo
  • Texture: the appearance and constistancy of a surface
  • Volume/ Form: the amount in a picture of something of a certain shape

Design Principles:
  • Balance: an even distribution of color or light
  • Harmony: a way that part of an image work together
  • Contrast: a way that parts of an image oppose yet supplement eachother
  • Movement: the way the content of an image appears to change or a direction it travels
  • Rythm: parts of an image that force the eyes to travel around to find the centerpoint of a photograph
